A few weeks back, we here at the Hex19 family celebrated the holidays with the fourth edition of a yearly tradition: The Annual Bacon, Breakfast, and Boardgames Marathon! Over a period of 24 hours we got some quality time with some some really cool titles, but the one that really made a mark on my night was a game called Cineplexity. Published by Out of the Box, this wonderfully simple party game turned out to be an incredibly fun and engaging challenge among our group of geeks. To find out more about the game and check out a video of how it plays, just click on after the break.
Cineplexity plays in a similar way to Apple to Apples, in that the entire game is played with just a stack of simple playing cards. But where in Apples to Apples, you're dealing with a wide array of objects, places, and people, the subject matter of cineplexity is limited to just movies. Each round, one player takes the turn of the 'director' (or 'judge'). This player selects two cards and presents them to the rest of the players. On these cards will be some sort of movie description, relating to the categories of actors, setting, props, era, etc. The job of the players is to be the first person to come up with a movie that describes both movies. First person to come up with one that works wins!
What I love about this game is how much discussion it prompted. Having a group of 7 or so people all arguing about the exact details of a certain movie is quite hilarious to experience. And if ever the round was too difficult, we ended up challenging ourselves to actually come up with an answer together. Cineplexity can be as competitive or laid back as you need it to be and the premise itself sets it up for infinite re-play-ability. All of this makes it the perfect party/ in-between game for any group of friends.
If you're not convinced yet, check out this video the guys at The Totally Rad Show put together of their first time playing.
